1912 – Bahamas underwater film pioneered with the Williamson Submarine Film Corp’s THIRTY LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
1913 – Bahamian-born star entertainer Bert Williams stars in the US black-cast feature production LIME KILN CLUB FIELD DAY
1930 – First sound and colour movies shown in the Bahamas.
1931 –Letter to the Editor, Tribune newspaper: a Fotosho Theatre patron complains at being asked to change seats because he was in the ‘white’ area.
1937 – September 30, fire destroys the Nassau and Montagu Theatre; the refurbished Nassau and the Savoy become Nassau’s premier Bay Street venues.
1949 – Sidney Poitier’s motion picture debut: NO WAY OUT. Censorship restrictions prevent widespread screening in The Bahamas.
1950 – Black Bahamian entrepreneur Percy Pinder opens the prestigious Capitol Theatre on East Street, Nassau
1956 Desegregation legislation ends racial segregation at Nassau’s whites-only Savoy Theatre
1963 – Sidney Poitier wins Best Actor Oscar for his role as Homer Smith in LILIES OF THE FIELD
1997 Bahamian-Danish star Etta Cameron rewarded for service to Danish culture with the title of Knight of the Order of Dannebrog
2004 Launch of Bahamas International Film Festival
2012 Maria Govan’s WOMANISH WAYS wins the Award in Documentary at Philadelphia Urban Suburban Film Festival
2014 Restored version of Bert Williams’ 1913 LIME KILN CLUB FIELD DAY premieres at MoMA, New York.
