Cinema History and Memory

In summer 2019, the HoMER Network (History of Moviegoing, Exhibition and Reception) staged its annual conference at the University of the Bahamas. Bahamas Film Culture Project co-founder Monique Toppin used the occasion to take colleagues on a tour of former cinemas around downtown Nassau and the city’s Over-the-Hill district. Monique had conducted oral history research on the history of Bahamas cinemagoing. In 2019, she was in the last throes of writing up the project for her doctoral dissertation. The research formed the basis of her guided tour. It also frames the virtual tour around 1950s cinema history that we offer on this page.
