Underwater Film

In 2019, the Bahamas Film Culture Project was granted kind permission by the Thanhouser Film Corporation to present free-to-view on our website a film comprising the earliest extant underwater film footage from The Bahamas. IN THE TROPICAL SEAS (1914), photographed by Carl Louis Gregory with the participation of filmmakers John Ernest Williamson and George M. Williamson, can be found on this page. We also provide here a companion essay by Erica Carter. The essay explores cinema’s long-term love affair with Bahamian marine environments; it shares insights from our ongoing research into underwater filmmaking in Bahamian film heritage and cultural memory, and points towards films, publications and online resources for further research.
